Buyer's Guide to Volvo Brake Drums

What Brake Drums Do

When you apply pressure to the brake pedal, the master brake cylinder sends brake fluid through hoses and lines. The fluid pressure builds, causing a brake shoe to affix to the brake drum to produce the friction needed.

The Types of Brake Drums

If your car or SUV is equipped with regular drum brakes, the shoes or pads press on the drum's inner surface. If it has clasp brakes instead, those press on the drum's outside. Pinch drums press the drum between two shoes. Lastly, a band brake adds a belt that wraps around the drum.

How to Spot Failing Brake Drums

Signs of trouble include:

  • You can't set your parking brake
  • The brake pedal vibrates or bounces
  • You hear odd noises coming from your brakes
  • Your brakes take more time and distance to respond to your input

If you do need new brake drums, it's worth remembering that your manufacturer designed and made theirs specifically to work with the system already in place in your model. That's a fitment guarantee that generic parts can't match.
