Buyer's Guide to Volvo Brake Shoes
What Brake Shoes Do
A brake shoe is a crescent-shaped piece of steel with a rough material added to one side to add friction points. They're placed inside of the brake drums. When you press your foot against the brake pedal, the brake shoes respond by pushing against the drum. That produces the resistance needed to slow down the wheels.
The Types of Volvo Brake Shoes
There are four types of brake shoes. Everyday brake shoes press the inner surface of the drum brake. Clasp brake shoes press on the drum's exterior. Pinch drum brakes get pressed between two brake shoes. Lastly, band brakes feature a flexible belt that wrap around the drum.
How to Spot Faulty Brake Shoes
No matter which type of brakes your Volvo model uses, brake shoes can eventually wear down and go bad. Signs of trouble include:
- You hear scraping or squeaking noises when you're braking
- The brakes take longer to respond
- The parking brake feels loose or isn’t working properly
How Much Do Brake Shoes Cost?
Of course, the parts price depends on your model, the type of brake shoe you choose, and now much work is involved. On average, though, it costs between $260 and $300 to replace brake shoes, with labor running about half of that total.
