Select The Year Of Your Vehicle Below
The Volvo 940 that rolled out for the 1991 model year was a revamped version of the marque's Volvo 740. With a larger trunk than its predecessor and a refreshed interior layout, the car was offered in sedan and wagon body styles. Engine options included naturally aspirated and turbo 2.3-liter inline-four options, with manual or automatic transmissions teamed to those engines. The car was discontinued in the U.S. following the 1995 model year.
Common Volvo 940 Problems
Unsurprisingly, owners have noted some issues with their cars in the three decades since its release. Those concerns included a failed transmission overdrive relay, fuel pump relay failure preventing the car from starting, engine stalls due to a faulty mass airflow sensor, erratic shifting from the automatic transmission, braking causing the front end to feel "loose," and rattling noises from a loose exhaust heat shield.
Volvo 940 Recalls
Volvo has issued three recalls that might affect your car. Those were for a throttle sticking and not returning to idle, insufficient seat belt fastening directions, and fuel leaks when you're filling the gas tank in warm weather.
To confirm that these recalls have been addressed, enter your VIN on the NHTSA website. It'll either note that there are no outstanding recalls, or tell you which are still outstanding.
