Volvo Alternators FAQ

What Do Volvo Alternators Do?

The alternator in your Volvo car or SUV is responsible for distributing electricity to the parts and systems that need it. That makes it a critical part of your vehicle's charging system. What is does is basic. It converts the engine's mechanical energy into electrical energy.

How Does A Volvo Alternator Work?

That's a bit more complex. The crankshaft takes the vertical energy from the engine pistons and turns it into rotary motion. That moves a belt attached to a pulley located on the rotor shaft. Inside the rotor shaft, magnetic coils get agitated to the point that they produce a magnetic field. A rectifier captures that field as DC power and turns it into AC power. A voltage regulator manages that power, feeding it to your battery, electronics, windshield wipers, power windows, and other parts.

How Do You Spot a Failing Alternator?

Sign of trouble include:

  • Dimming or flickering headlights
  • Stereo system trouble
  • Your power windows quit working
  • A whining noise from the engine
  • You notice a burning smell coming from under the hood
