What They Do

In the simplest explanation, an A/C compressor powers the air conditioning in your car or SUV. It does that by transferring power from the engine to a pulley that's mounted on your compressor. That, in turn, causes the compressor to put the refrigerant in your A/C system under pressure before passing the gas along to the condenser, after which the refrigerant is transformed twice -- first into a liquid and then a lower pressure gas -- before passing through the air vents and into your cabin.
